CD Projekt Red has announced on X that they will be releasing a mod editor for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. According to the developer, it “will allow you to create your own experiences in the game by making something completely new or editing existing quests and content”.

It’s also been confirmed the mod will be free and will be released in 2024. There is no confirmed date as yet, but it’s certainly going to get a lot of people back exploring the world of the Witcher again. The news follows somewhat of a renaissance for the Polish developer, after a hugely successful Cyberpunk 2.0 patch and a fantastic standalone story, which we loved, in Phantom Liberty.

The details about how the editor will work exactly are still under wraps, but the developer confirmed they will be sharing more next year. It’s also not known if the mod editor will be exclusive to PC or whether some or all elements will be available for console. We are hopeful given the nature of the editor, which will allow fans to change, modify and create quests, that this will be released across all versions of Wild Hunt.

It’s a nice addition to the modding scene that Witcher 3 already enjoys. Creators have already worked on exciting story mods like Ciri’s Sole Memento and Toussaint Extended in the past. Making these tools easier to access would entice modders to work on even more nuanced stories in the Witcher universe.

The Witcher 3 was a huge success and is widely regarded as one of the finest videogames ever made. It first arrived on last-gen consoles and PC in 2015. By 2019, the game had sold more than 28 million units. As of March this year, more than 50 million units have been sold, and a spin-off TV show, also based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s character is entering its fourth season.
